Jharkhand Elections: BJP bags 3 seats, INDI bloc dominance continues in Kolhan

Jamshedpur, Nov 23: The Kolhan region witnessed a dramatic shift in the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections, with voters delivering a mix of upsets and resounding victories that have reshaped its political landscape.

In 2019, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) had swept all 14 seats in Kolhan, but this year, the BJP and AJSU Party joined forces to challenge the dominance of the INDIA Alliance.

Despite their efforts, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) managed to secure only three seats, underscoring the continuing strength of the JMM and its allies.

Jamshedpur East became a defining moment for the BJP as Purnima Sahu delivered a crushing defeat to Congress heavyweight Ajoy Kumar, winning by an emphatic margin of 42,871 votes.

Sahu’s 1,07,191 votes not only secured the seat for the BJP but also solidified its foothold in an otherwise challenging election.

In stark contrast, Jamshedpur West witnessed veteran leader Saryu Roy of the Janata Dal (United) maintaining his dominance, defeating Congress candidate Banna Gupta by 8,100 votes in a fiercely contested battle.

The contest in Potka saw a major political upset as JMM’s Sanjib Sardar toppled Meera Munda, the wife of former Chief Minister Arjun Munda, with a margin of 27,902 votes.

Former Chief Minister Champai Soren made a remarkable comeback, securing victory in Seraikela for the BJP by defeating JMM’s Ganesh Mahali with a lead of 20,447 votes.

However, the BJP faced setbacks elsewhere, with JMM retaining its dominance in Ghatsila and Baharagora.

Ramdas Soren defeating former Chief Minister Champai Soren’s son Babulal Soren delivered a powerful blow to the BJP, securing victories with margins of 22,446 votes in Ghatsila.

In Chaibasa, JMM’s Deepak Birua delivered a humiliating defeat to Geeta Balmuchu by a margin of 64,835 votes, cementing the party’s grip on the constituency.

Chakradharpur also remained under JMM control, with Sukhram Oraon defeating BJP’s Shashibhushan Samad by 9,310 votes.

JMM further showcased its strength in Majhgaon, where Niral Purty triumphed over BJP’s Barkuwar Gagrai with a landslide margin of 59,603 votes.

Meanwhile, in Jaganathpur, Congress’s Sona Ram Sinku narrowly edged out BJP’s Geeta Kora, wife of former Chief Minister Madhu Kora by 7,383 votes, offering a rare but significant win for the Congress in Kolhan.

Despite its alliance with the AJSU Party, the BJP failed to replicate its 2019 sweep in other regions of Jharkhand. The Kolhan results highlight the JMM’s continued dominance, with voters prioritizing grassroots leadership and rejecting dynastic politics in many areas.

The three seats won by the NDA—Jamshedpur East, Jamshedpur West, and Seraikela—contrast sharply with the JMM’s strong showing across the region.

The website has fallen to an all time low running BJP’s propaganda. Yuck.

Why don’t you write ND Alliance or ND block for NDA, A-holes?
