Mail News Service

Barhet, Nov 23: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has achieved a resounding victory in Barhet, securing his third consecutive win from the tribal-reserved assembly seat in Sahebganj district. Soren defeated BJP’s Gamliel Hembram by an impressive margin of 39,791 votes, solidifying his stronghold in the region.

Soren garnered 95,612 votes, while Hembram managed 55,821. The win marks Soren’s continued dominance in Barhet, where he had previously defeated BJP’s Simon Malto in 2019 and Hemlal Murmu in 2014.

The Barhet constituency, with its significant tribal and minority population, played a decisive role in the election outcome. The seat recorded a voter turnout of 59.73% during the second phase of polling, reaffirming Soren’s popularity among the electorate.

With this victory, Hemant Soren continues to demonstrate his influence in the tribal heartland, further cementing his leadership in Jharkhand politics. (w/nkm)

BJP’s gamble falls short

BJP had fielded Gamliel Hembram in an attempt to challenge Soren, a relatively new face who left his job five years ago to enter politics. Hembram’s wife is also a public representative, reflecting his family’s growing involvement in politics. Despite this, Hembram struggled to make a significant impact, receiving only 2,500 votes against Soren in their previous contest in 2019.
