Police have arrested a wireless operator for allegedly raping a woman inside Gamharia police station in Jharkhand’s Seraikela-Kharsawan district.
The accused, identified as Neeraj Lakra, was sent to judicial custody on Saturday following the victim’s written complaint.
Authorities constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the incident and recommended disciplinary action against five personnel, including the Station House Officer.
The victim initially fled her home on Thursday night following a domestic dispute with her husband over a meal.
She sought shelter at a nearby house, where a resident called the police emergency response team to assist her around midnight.
Responding officers brought the woman to Gamharia police station and offered her a room to spend the night safely.
The victim alleged that Lakra later entered the locked room late at night and sexually assaulted her despite her resistance.
She broke her bangles and sustained facial scratches while fighting back, eventually injuring Lakra’s finger with a small vegetable knife.
Although the victim shouted for help, four responding officers allegedly walked away from the room without intervening to protect her.
On Friday morning, a police officer gave her 700 rupees and sent her to the railway station in an auto-rickshaw.
The victim met her husband at Gamharia Railway Station, disclosed the night’s events, and subsequently returned to report the crime.
Senior officers launched an immediate investigation after learning of the grave allegations on Friday night.
A forensic team from Ranchi inspected the crime scene on Saturday afternoon to collect physical and biological evidence.
SDPO Anubhav Bhardwaj confirmed that an FIR has been registered and the victim has undergone official medical examinations.
