Jharkhand CM nod to government jobs for Paharia, Birhor dependants

Ranchi, February 20: Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Sunday approved the proposal to provide government jobs to the dependents of the employees of Pahadia and Birhor tribes.

Every government has been making promises and claims for development of Primitive Tribe group. But on the ground, the pictures of development are visible only blurry. However, the Hemant Soren-led coalition government seems to be making sincere efforts in this direction.

After the approval it would be placed for a final approval of the council of ministers at the cabinet meeting.

According to a release issued by office of the chief minister, the order has got the nod for appointment of Phulmani Paharin dependent wife of deceased Baliram Pahadia, former Panchayat Secretary, Block Office, Poraiyahat (in Godda district) and Jito Devi dependent wife of Puna Birhor, former Anusevak, Block Office Dulmi, Ramgarh district for Group ‘D’ post on the basis of compassion.

It will now be placed in the meeting of the Council of Ministers for formal approval to cancel the prescribed educational qualification.

Significantly, both Paharia and Birhor are believed be the earliest inhabitants of the region, Paharia once ruled the hills of present day Santhal Pargana division in Jharkhand. Santhal Pargana covers six districts of the state — Godda, Deoghar, Dumka, Jamtara, Sahibganj and Pakur. Today, Paharia have been reduced to mere 90,761 people in the state, alienated from their forests and struggling poverty, malnutrition and human trafficking

Jharkhand has 32 tribal groups of which nine are identified by the Union ministry of tribal affairs as particularly vulnerable tribal groups, commonly known as PVTGs and both Birhor and Paharaiya are amongst these 32 groups.

These tribal groups are considered highly vulnerable because of low literacy, economic backwardness, declining or stagnant population, and pre-agricultural level of technology.

The Primitive Tribe (PTG) population in Jharkhand (Census 2011) is 2,92,359. Of these, the population of males is 146,814, while the number of females is 145,545.

The population of Birhor tribe in the state is 10726 and the population of Paharia tribe is 25585.
