BJP demands NCW probe after woman raped inside Gamharia police station

The Jharkhand Bharatiya Janata Party urged the National Commission for Women on Sunday to investigate a rape inside a police station in Seraikela-Kharsawan district.
Jamshedpur East MLA Purnima Das Sahu wrote to the Commission demanding a time-bound probe. She requested the preservation of CCTV footage from Gamharia police station.
Sahu also urged the panel to provide a legal adviser and security to the victim. She criticized the police administration for failing to protect women in custody.
BJP state vice-president Geeta Koda led a protest march in Gamharia. Party workers burned an effigy of the state government during the demonstration.
Protesters demanded capital punishment for the arrested constable. The accused wireless operator allegedly assaulted the woman inside a police station room on October 29.
The woman had called the police following a domestic dispute with her husband. Officers transported her to the police station without any female personnel present.
Authorities suspended five policemen, including the station officer-in-charge, for dereliction of duty. However, Sahu stated that suspension alone was insufficient punishment for negligence.
She demanded strict legal action against all personnel who tried to conceal evidence. Sahu emphasized that police stations must remain safe havens for female citizens.
During the protest rally, Koda highlighted the rising violence against women across the state. She called for immediate reforms within the regional law enforcement system.
Koda urged authorities to deploy adequate female officers at every police station. She emphasized the urgent need to create women-friendly environments for filing complaints.
