Jamshedpur, Jan 6: Mental health and wellbeing awareness is growing comparatively well but not upto expectations if one considers the amount of efforts being put in by a few institutions. The first such institution that took up cudgels against mental ailments in and around Jamshedpur was JEEVAN that was launched by Dr Mahabir Ram and now is reckoned as a lighthouse to help navigate life through a rocky and rough sea of life and living. A case in point is the fact that as compared to the year 2021 suicides were less in 2022.
JEEVAN, set up with the basic purpose of preventing suicides, has been working incessantly and tirelessly towards this objective. JEEVAN founder Dr Mahabir Ram and Director, Dr Jivraj Jain, in a press communiqué informed that the COVID period did account for mental imbalance but in spite of it, incidences of suicide in Jamshedpur were much less as compared to other periods.
According to JEEVAN, the suicide cases were 255 but the figure reduced to 206 in 2022 that included 148 males and 58 women. The figures go to show that the suicide count had climbed down by 49 lesser instances of suicide or 19 percent whereas the city population rose from 1.63 lakh in 2021 to 1.66 lakh in 1922.
In a press release issued on Friday, January 6, Dr Mahabir Ram and Director Dr Jivraj Jain expressed optimism when they stated, “If the people of Jamshedpur continue to cooperate and be supportive towards our aim of eradicating negative mental conditions through our free services for ailments that are kept absolute secret, JEEVAN will rise above all odds and like upto its mission as time rolls on.”
The JEEVAN authorities mentioned that statistically, as per records, one in every five persons had mental problems. Taking into account Jamshedpur’s population, nearly 3.32 lakh persons were expected to be in the web of mental hassles. But, in spite of it all, only 769 persons had contacted JEEVAN for help. Dr Ram and Dr Jain attributed this comparative poor response to social stigma and a lack of knowledge on the importance of mental health.
Deputy Director of JEEVAN, Durga Rao has appealed to citizens that in case of any mental tension or ailments, they should unhesitatingly get in touch with this organization. He said, “One should know that like physical ailments, mental problems too should be paid attention to for both conditions require medical and psychiatric attention especially because, in most cases, both, the physical and mental conditions are usually interrelated. In certain cases, mental conditions require closer attention. Sixty percent of physical ailments are related to mental conditions. If the basic ailments are timely tended to, the physical diseases too are cured.”
JEEVAN services are available round-the-year and the working hours at its Bistupur office are between 10 am and 6 pm. the contact numbers are 9297777500 and 9297777499.
