Jamshedpur: In a significant step towards strengthening mental health support in the city, Jamshedpur’s suicide prevention centre, Jeevan, has announced plans to expand its services by extending working hours from 10 am to 10 pm. The move aims to ensure wider access to emotional support for individuals facing distress and mental health challenges.
Officials of Jeevan said the proposed extension of hours is designed to reach more people who may be unable to seek help during the existing time frame. At present, Jeevan offers in-person befriending every day from 10 am to 6 pm at its centre located at 25 Q Road, Bistupur, Jamshedpur. Emotional Support through telephone and WhatsApp is also available through dedicated helpline numbers 9297777499 and 9297777500, providing immediate assistance to those facing an emotional crisis.
Alongside service expansion, Jeevan has intensified efforts to strengthen its volunteer base, recognising the critical role trained and empathetic listeners play in suicide prevention. The organisation has invited citizens willing to devote at least four hours a week to join its mission of offering hope and emotional support.
To be eligible as a volunteer, applicants must be 21 years or older, hold a graduate degree in any stream, possess empathy and strong listening skills, and be capable of reading, writing, and conversing in both Hindi and English. Volunteers must also be available to devote four continuous hours per week on any day.
The process to become a Jeevan volunteer includes filling out an application form at the centre, followed by an interview upon shortlisting. Selected candidates will then undergo structured training before actively engaging in befriending and support services.
Jeevan has also made a strong appeal to citizens not to hesitate in seeking mental health support during moments of emotional crisis. Emphasising that reaching out is a sign of strength and not weakness, the organisation reiterated its commitment to standing by individuals in distress and working towards preventing loss of life through timely intervention and compassionate care.
