Jamshedpur: Amid rising concerns surrounding mental health, ‘Jeevan’ Suicide Prevention Centre, Jamshedpur has issued a vital appeal highlighting the emotional challenges faced by today’s youth—especially students transitioning into college life in new cities. The Centre emphasized that many young individuals grapple with stress, loneliness, and academic pressure, leading to increased risks of depression and suicidal tendencies.
According to mental health experts at the Centre, students who move away from home for higher education often face multiple challenges simultaneously—adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings, living without their usual support system of friends and family, becoming self-reliant, and striving for strong academic performance. The cumulative pressure from these experiences can become overwhelming for many.
A volunteer at Jeevan Suicide Prevention Centre stated that it is important to acknowledge and accept one’s emotions. “It is completely normal to feel anxious or lonely at times,” they said, adding that giving oneself the space to feel and process these emotions is essential. They further advised students to stay positive, maintain an optimistic mindset, and continue motivating themselves as part of caring for their mental well-being.
Maintaining physical health was also underscored—by eating a nutritious, balanced diet, getting adequate sleep, and engaging in regular physical exercise. The volunteer stressed the importance of staying connected with friends and family through social media, phone calls, or messages to avoid emotional isolation.
“In times of distress, do not hesitate to seek help—whether from teachers, counselors, or someone you trust,” the volunteer urged. They also emphasized the need for self-care, encouraging students to occasionally take a break from daily routines and give themselves moments of rest and relaxation.
The Centre has also called on schools and colleges to pay greater attention to the mental well-being of students. Institutions were encouraged to organize regular counseling sessions and mental health awareness programs to create supportive environments on campus.
Parents were advised to engage in open conversations with their children, build trust, and understand their emotional needs. Jeevan cautioned that signs such as persistent sadness, irritability, guilt, disinterest in studies, or social withdrawal should not be ignored—and professional mental health support should be sought immediately if such symptoms appear.
The organization appealed to all parents to build emotionally connected and supportive environments at home to ensure children remain mentally and physically healthy.
For those experiencing stress or emotional distress, Jeevan can be contacted at 9297777499 or 9297777500. In-person emotional support is also available at the Jeevan Centre located at 25, Q Road, Bistupur, Jamshedpur.
