Jamshedpur, June 23: An awareness programme on Suicide Prevention was conducted by JEEVAN for the Officers, Junior Commissioned officers and Non Commissioned officers of the Army Camp at CH Area, Jamshedpur.
During the programme Brig Vaidyanathan highlighted the high rate of suicides in Jamshedpur particularly among the youth and explained the steps being taken by JEEVAN to contain this.
He also highlighted that 80 % of the suicides are pre planned and during the intervening period from the decision till commitment, the individual sends a number of signals.
If one has the knowledge of these signals it is possible to save the person from committing suicides by giving an opportunity to share his problems and by extending emotional support to him. He added that 90% of the suicides fail during the first attempt.
The very fact that they were already depressed and attempted an unsuccessful suicide, will drag them further to severe depression and force them to commit suicide again. Instead of attempting to hide such cases they should be given an opportunity to share their problems followed by an emotional support.
While thanking JEEVAN for organising this programme for the defence personal in the Army Camp, Lt Col a Bobin Singh 2IC of the Regiment stated that the talk was equally relevant and valuable to them as the Defence also has a high rate of suicide.
