Jamshedpur: Volunteers of Jeevan, Jamshedpur-based suicide prevention centre conducted a 1.5-hour interactive session on ‘Empowering Oneself Emotionally’ for nearly 550 NCC cadets attending a 10-day summer camp at the NIT campus. The session aimed at creating awareness about mental health and encouraging young cadets to openly discuss emotional well-being.
The programme began with an engaging activity where cadets were asked to recall the happiest moment of their lives, helping them connect positively with their emotions. The volunteers then addressed the importance of removing the stigma surrounding conversations on mental health and explained how emotional well-being is as important as physical health.
During the session, cadets were sensitised about stress and common stressors faced in daily life. The speakers also highlighted various physical and emotional signs that may indicate an emotional crisis and encouraged cadets to seek timely support whenever needed.
The volunteers explained the role of Jeevan in providing emotional support and counselling assistance. Cadets were urged not to hesitate in seeking help for themselves or others facing emotional distress.
The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from the cadets, many of whom interacted actively with the speakers. At the end of the programme, all participants took a pledge to take care of their mental health and support others in maintaining emotional well-being.
Empowering oneself emotionally:
1. Spend some time with yourself regularly. Understand your strengths and weaknesses
2. Try to have a positive approach towards incidents life throws at you. It wouldn’t happen overnight. Regular practice would help
3. It’s okay not to be okay at times. We as humans have emotions which could vary in different situations
4. Remove the stigma around talking about mental health issues. Asking for emotional support isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s courageous.
5. Volunteers of Jeevan are available to help you sail through an emotional turbulence. Let’s talk.
