Janmashtami celebrations light up Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: The city came alive with the vibrant and joyous celebrations of Janmashtami on Wednesday night. Elaborately decorated cradles and devotees offering prayers marked the birth of Lord Krishna at Surya Mandir Sidhgora and other parts of the city.

The Surya Mandir Sidhgora temple was a sight to behold, adorned with streamers and lights that illuminated the night. A grand tableau featuring Lord Krishna and Radha, dressed in new clothes and adorned with flowers, became the centerpiece of the celebration.

At Krishna Temple, Telco, the day began at the crack of dawn, as early as 4.30 a.m., with prayers and devotion. The temple’s ambiance was further enhanced by colorful streamers and lights, which shone brightly as the night fell.

“The Janmashtami celebrations commenced with the Mangala aarti, followed by Guru puja and the Maha Abhishek,” shared a temple member.

“On Janmashtami, we generally fast. However, some people eat fruit and a few other specific items. The actual festivity begins late at night when Lord Krishna is believed to have been born,” explained Rajul Misra, a member of Krishna Mandir.

Ruhi Sharma, a school teacher, excitedly revealed her plans for the evening: “Janmashtami celebrations are great fun in our locality. Devotional songs are sung, and small girls dress up in all their finery imitating Krishna’s friends and dance. I will dress up my son as Krishna in a yellow dhoti, complete with a crown with a peacock feather.”

In numerous households, the idols of Lord Krishna and Radha were adorned with new yellow clothes and jewelry as devotees observed a day-long fast, busy preparing delicacies made of milk and fruits to offer to the Lord.

The city resonated with the spirit of festivity as devotees flocked to several decorated temples to offer their prayers to Lord Krishna. The melodious chants of ‘Hare Krishna… hare krishna’ filled the air.

With priests at the temples reciting Sanskrit verses and passages from the Bhagavad Gita, people chanted devotional songs as they thronged temples in various localities on Janmashtami, a celebration that marks the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most beloved Hindu deities. Particularly crowded was the Radha Krishna temple at Refugee Colony.

“Devotees began lining up in front of the temple as early as 5 a.m. It is believed that fasting with a sincere heart on Janmashtami fulfills wishes,” shared Devender Sharma, a priest.

“While devotees observed ritualistic fasts on the occasion, the more fervent devotees observed a Nirjal vrat (waterless fast) that is broken at midnight after offering prayers to hail Lord Krishna’s birth,” he added.

Idols of Lord Krishna at temples were adorned with flowers and electronic lights, mirroring the adornment of those in devotees’ homes, where they were bathed and offered new clothes. The city of Jamshedpur had truly embraced the essence of Janmashtami with devotion, joy, and fervor.
