Jamshedpur’s Voltas Roundabout gets green makeover

Horticultural Society inaugurates beautified traffic island 

Jamshedpur, July 8: The Horticultural Society, Jamshedpur, on Wednesday inaugurated the newly beautified Voltas Roundabout, transforming one of the city’s busiest traffic intersections into a green public space that promotes sustainability and environmental awareness.

The roundabout was inaugurated by D.B. Sundara Ramam, Vice President – Corporate Services, Tata Steel, and Ruchi Narendran, Chairperson of the Horticultural Society. The event was attended by Atul Bhatnagar, Managing Director of Tata Steel UISL, along with senior officials, members of the Horticultural Society, Tata Steel UISL and other invited guests.

The beautification project was inspired by the vision of Ruchi Narendran and is based on the theme “Responsible Citizens, Responsible City.” The initiative aims to encourage people to actively participate in keeping Jamshedpur clean, green and environmentally sustainable.

With the support of Tata Steel UISL, the Horticultural Society has redesigned the roundabout using eco-friendly landscaping techniques. The project focuses on the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, with several decorative elements created from recycled materials. The initiative demonstrates how waste materials can be creatively reused to develop attractive and functional public spaces.

The landscaped roundabout features hardy plant species and low-maintenance greenery, ensuring long-term sustainability while enhancing the city’s green cover. The project also highlights the importance of responsible urban landscaping and environmental conservation.

The team behind the successful execution of the project included S.B. Mondal, Sarad Mandal, Dr. Dhananjay Choubey, Ashwani Srivastava, Alok Kumar Choudhary, Manoj Kumar and Sukanya Das.

Speaking on the occasion, representatives of the Horticultural Society said the project reflects the organisation’s continued commitment to creating environmentally responsible and aesthetically appealing public spaces. They also appealed to citizens to help preserve public property by maintaining cleanliness and supporting city beautification efforts.

The Society reiterated its campaign message: “Respect Nature, Green Jamshedpur is Our Mission. Responsible Citizens Build a Responsible City.”

The Horticultural Society also announced that it will continue working with Tata Steel and Tata Steel UISL to develop more sustainable green landmarks across Jamshedpur. The initiative aims to encourage greater community participation in making the city cleaner, greener and more beautiful for future generations.
