Jamshedpur, April 11: The Tata Steel Zoological Park (TSZP) has announced the names of its newly arrived tiger pair from Nagpur Zoo—“Rudra” for the male and “Meghna” for the female—following an overwhelming response from Jamshedpur residents.

Launched on March 21, 2025, the public naming campaign received enthusiastic participation, with 318 citizens submitting unique name suggestions via SMS and WhatsApp by the March 24 deadline. To finalize the names, the zoo formed a special committee which considered the frequency, relevance, and symbolic significance of the suggested names.

The winning entries were submitted by Sahil Sharma, who was declared the winner of the contest. Interestingly, “Rudra” was also suggested by ten other participants. As part of the recognition, Sahil Sharma will get a special opportunity for a close photo with the tiger pair, while all 11 contributors of the name “Rudra” will be invited to attend the inaugural event of the new tiger enclosure.

The inaugural ceremony will be held on Monday, April 21, at 4:00 PM, with Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President of Corporate Services at Tata Steel and President of the Tata Steel Zoological Society, attending as the chief guest. During the event, all shortlisted participants will be honored with mementos from the zoo in appreciation of their enthusiastic participation in the initiative.

The naming contest highlights TSZP’s efforts to engage the community and promote awareness about wildlife conservation through inclusive and creative participation.
