Jamshedpur’s Dhalbhumgarh Airport: A Catalyst for Kolhan’s Economic Renaissance

AK Srivastava

The Dhalbhumgarh and Ghatshila region of Kolhan has long been renowned for its natural beauty, rich mineral resources, and historical significance. At one time, the area was recognized across India for its healthy environment, copper mining activities, industrial growth, and high standard of living.

Even today, the region possesses abundant reserves of copper, gold, silver, and other valuable minerals. In this context, the construction of Dhalbhumgarh Airport is not merely a transportation project but a potential catalyst for the economic and industrial revival of the entire Kolhan region.

During the British era, the Ghatshila-Musabani belt was among the country’s leading copper-producing regions. The mines and related industries generated employment and significantly contributed to the local economy.

However, over time, mining production declined, industries weakened, and many entrepreneurs and professionals migrated to other cities. Consequently, the pace of development in the region slowed considerably.

Today, as Jharkhand moves forward with the expansion of mineral-based industries, investment opportunities, and infrastructure development, the need for Dhalbhumgarh Airport has become more important than ever. Jamshedpur, despite being one of India’s major industrial hubs, still lacks a full-fledged commercial airport. The distance to Ranchi and transportation constraints continue to pose challenges for investors, industrialists, business travelers, and tourists.

The establishment of Dhalbhumgarh Airport would not only improve air connectivity but would also have a direct impact on industry, trade, tourism, and employment. Areas such as Ghatshila, Musabani, Chakulia, and Bahragora would become more attractive destinations for investment.

The revival of closed mines, proposed industrial projects, and mineral-based industries would gain fresh momentum. Furthermore, the region’s strategic location near the Jharkhand–Odisha border makes it highly suitable for future industrial expansion.

Local Member of Parliament Bidyut Baran Mahato has played a significant role in advancing this project. He has consistently raised the issue before Parliament and the concerned ministries. Recent progress in land acquisition and positive indications from the Central Government regarding regional development and mining-sector investments have strengthened hopes that this long-awaited project may soon become a reality.

It must also be recognized that the success of an airport depends not only on the construction of runways and terminal buildings but also on the growth of surrounding industries, trade, tourism, and economic activities. Therefore, alongside the airport project, the government should focus on reviving the mines of Ghatshila and Musabani, implementing the proposed industrial projects in Chakulia, and encouraging new investments throughout the region.

Dhalbhumgarh Airport is not merely a transportation facility; it has the potential to become the foundation of Kolhan’s future development. If the government, industry leaders, and public representatives work together with commitment and vision, this project can usher in a new era of economic growth, employment generation, and investment in the region.

The recent visit of Satish Chandra Dubey, Member of Parliament from Valmiki Nagar and Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, has further strengthened optimism regarding the project. With sustained efforts and coordinated action, the decades-old dream of Dhalbhumgarh Airport can finally become a reality, giving a new direction and momentum to the development of the Kolhan region.
