Jamshedpur Women’s University celebrates International Women’s Day

Jamshedpur, Mar 9: A solemn celebration of International Women’s Day took place on Saturday at the Sidhgora Campus of Jamshedpur Women’s University. The event, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Anjila Gupta, featured the announcement of an annual gold medal and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh for the topper student in Economics in memory of the late Dr. Rekha Jha. Padmashree Chhutni Mahato was the chief guest at the ceremony.

The celebration included a street play by Journalism and Mass Communication students, a recitation of an English poem by Megha Rao, and a poem titled ‘Hey Stree’ recited by Kshamashree. B.Ed students presented a beautiful dance under the direction of Sudha Deep. In her speech, Chief Guest Padmashree Chhutni Mahato shared her personal life story and her efforts to empower women, having freed about 215 women from the harmful practice of being labeled as witches.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Anjila Gupta discussed the achievements of women in various fields and emphasized the need for women to move forward while understanding their unique characteristics. In a significant announcement, the Vice-Chancellor revealed that, in memory of the late Dr. Rekha Jha, a former Associate Professor, the topper student in Economics would receive a gold medal and Rs. one lakh annually. Dr. Rekha Jha had passed away due to cancer last year, and her husband, Varun Jha, made this announcement to encourage economics students at the university.

Expressing gratitude to the family of late Rekha Jha, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Anjila Gupta mentioned that all necessary procedures for this award would be completed soon by the Controller of Examinations, Dr. Rama Subramaniam. The event also acknowledged the participation of 35 physics students in a two-week training program organized by Tata Power Skill Development Institute, where certificates were distributed to the participants. The Registrar of Jamshedpur Women’s University, Rajendra Kumar Jaiswal, along with other dignitaries, faculty, and students, were present at the ceremony. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Manisha Titus.
