Jamshedpur Women’s University celebrates Hindi Journalism Day

Responsibility of younger gen journos to keep regional language dailies from extinction:  Sanjay Mishra

Jamshedpur, May 30: The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Jamshedpur Women’s University (JWU) marked Hindi Journalism Day with a grand and thought-provoking celebration on May 30. The event highlighted the significance and evolving role of Hindi journalism in modern India, while also fostering awareness and responsibility among aspiring journalists.

The program was graced by Sanjay Mishra, Editor of Prabhat Khabar Jamshedpur, as the chief guest. He was joined by Dr. Sudhir Kumar Sahu, Dean and Media In-Charge, Dr. Javed Ahmed, Finance Officer, Dr. Salomi Kujur, Development Officer, and Dr. Annapurna Jha, C.V.C., who chaired the session.

In his address, Mishra expressed concern over the decline of regional and national language newspapers. “Over the years, Urdu and many other language newspapers have disappeared, and Hindi newspapers are now facing a similar threat. It is the duty of today’s youth to protect and preserve the integrity and existence of Hindi journalism,” he said. He emphasized the need for linguistic purity and responsible journalism.

Chairperson of the function, Dr. Sudhir Kumar Sahu, highlighted the shift in journalism’s character over the decades. “Journalism during the freedom struggle was driven by fearless truth-telling. Sadly, even after 75 years of independence, that spirit is fading. Paid news, misinformation, and propaganda dominate electronic media today. True journalism must continue to uncover and present the truth fearlessly,” he stated.

As part of the celebrations, a series of creative competitions were conducted on May 28 and 29 to engage students and provide a platform for expression. These included essay writing, poster making, and an extempore speech competition, all centered around themes related to Hindi journalism.

A total of 56 students enthusiastically participated. The essay writing competition, with the theme “Contribution of Hindi Journalism in Developed India”, was won by Kumari Nisha, followed by Manisha Mandal (second place) and Archana Sardar (third). In the poster-making competition, based on the “History of Hindi Journalism”, Nazia Parveen secured first place, with Swati Kumari and Shivangi Kumari taking second and third positions respectively. The extempore competition, with topics announced on the spot, saw Ratna Priya Mishra win first place, followed by Isha Bagh and Neha Kumari.

The judging panel included Dr. Pushpa Kumari (Hindi Department), Dr. Rupali Patra (Botany Department), and Dr. Gloria Purti (Commerce Department), who evaluated entries fairly and impartially.
