Jamshedpur, Oct 7: In a fresh case of cybercrime in the city, a 32-year-old woman who was seeking a suitable match for her through a famous matrimonial site was duped of Rs 11 lakhs.
According to information, the girl who is a resident of Sonari, the victim had a month ago sought the bridegroom through the popular matrimony site, Shaadi. Com. She also shared her bio-data.
However, almost a month after she allegedly encountered a US-based doctor over the phone, the so-called doctor started talking to the girl and made her fall in his trap by promising her to marry. They started chatting over the phone. But the calls to the victim were being made from Delhi and not from the USA.
The doctor expressed his eagerness to come to India to meet his would-be wife and of course got consent from the victim.
On Saturday, the girl got a call from the said doctor who informed her that he had already come to Mumbai, but was in a legal hassle with some customs officials.
The doctor claimed that he brought gifts for her, but the gifts were seized by the Customs officials who were demanding a huge amount to release them. He told her that he was left with not much money.
The victim immediately agreed to help the doctor. Subsequently, the girl transferred Rs 11 lakhs through as many as 20 transactions to various bank accounts. Lastly, she began to doubt while talking to the so-called doctor.
After transferring her deposit when the girl wanted to know whether the doctor’s problem was sorted out, the call she had made did not connect. His cellphone was found switched off. Then only the victim realized her mistake and on Tuesday turned up at the Bistupur-based cyber police station for lodging an FIR against the fake doctor.
OC, Cyber police station, inspector Upendra Mandal said that they have registered a case on the FIR lodged by the victim who has been duped of Rs 11 lakhs by a cyber-criminal.
