Jamshedpur woman accuses cops of demanding bribe

Jamshedpur, Oct 20: A woman from Bagbera, Durgawati Devi, has complained against two police officers for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from her in lieu of granting her police bail.

The complainant, in petitions sent to the Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), said the accused cops, ASI Santosh Kumar of Kadma PS and ASI Pradip Singh of Golmuri PS, had approached her in Gazipur on 17th October last and demanded Rs 1 lakh for granting her bail from police station in a case of assault and chain snatching lodged by her sister Saroj Devi in 2018.

Durgawati said her sister had initially lodged an FIR against her neighbour Manoj Jha in 2012 but later got her name included in the FIR. She said she had lent Rs 2 lakh to Saroj for medical treatment and had demanded the money back from her which led to the FIR against her, sources said. She said she got bail in 2021 and was later threatened by the accused cops of dire consequences when she refused to bribe them.
