Jamshedpur: Woman accused of being a witch by in-laws, driven out of home

Jamshedpur, Nov 22: A woman was beaten up and driven out of her house in Patamda recently after being accused of practicing witchcraft by her in-laws. The woman, Astami Baske, has registered a complaint at the Patmda police station against her husband Rameshwar Baske, father in-law Haripado Baske, mother in-law Usharani Baske and Sansari Baske.

Astami, a resident of Layadih village has told the police that she got married to Rameshwar eight years ago. She alleged that when she could not conceive even after a year, the in-laws got aggressive and started beating her up. Astami had filed an appeal before a court accusing her husband and in-laws of physical abuse, demanding dowry. She had also sought maintenance from her husband in the court complaint. The matter is subjudice.

The woman has told the Patamda police that since March 29, 2022, her in-laws started accusing her of being a witch. She claimed that they often beat her and abused her and recently they drove her out of the house. Patamda police officials said that the allegations leveled against her in-laws by Astami are being investigated.
