Man Chokes to Death on Rasgulla at Jamshedpur Wedding

Jamshedpur: A festive wedding celebration in Malianta village, under the MGM police station area, turned into a scene of mourning late Saturday night when a 41-year-old man died after a rasgulla became lodged in his throat. The victim, identified as Lalit Singh, was a resident of the Belajuri Panchayat.

The Fatal Incident

The incident occurred around 1:00 AM during the wedding feast. According to eyewitnesses, Lalit Singh began to struggle for breath immediately after swallowing the sweet. As the rasgulla obstructed his airway, he began to gasp and flail in distress.

Guests at the scene attempted to dislodge the food, but their efforts failed. Seeing his condition deteriorate rapidly, family and friends rushed him to Tata Main Hospital (TMH). However, doctors declared him ‘brought dead’ upon arrival. Authorities handed over the body to the family on Saturday following a post-mortem examination.

Medical Insight: Why Did This Happen?

The unusual nature of the death prompted local medical experts to explain the biological cause. Dr. Balaram Jha of MGM Hospital clarified that the tragedy likely involved the epiglottis, a small flap of tissue in the throat.

“The epiglottis acts like a ‘traffic police officer,'” Dr. Jha explained. “When we swallow, it covers the trachea (windpipe) to ensure food enters the esophagus (food pipe) instead. If this mechanism fails, food enters the airway—a condition known as aspiration—which can cause death within minutes.”

High-Risk Factors

Doctors highlighted specific circumstances that lead to such fatal choking:

  • Intoxication: Alcohol slows down the nervous system, preventing the epiglottis from reacting quickly enough to protect the airway.

  • Talking or Laughing: Speaking or laughing while swallowing keeps the epiglottis open, allowing food to slip into the windpipe.

  • Large Bites: Sticky or soft sweets like rasgulla can easily mold to the shape of the airway, creating a total blockage.

Safety Recommendations

Experts urge the public to maintain focus while eating. They recommend taking small bites, especially when consuming soft or sticky sweets, and strictly avoiding heavy meals while talking, laughing, or under the influence of alcohol.
