Jamshedpur Water Crisis: Faulty pumps leave residents parched

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur, March 26: A major water crisis has hit Zone No. 3, Mango, affecting areas from Shankosai to Subhash Colony since Tuesday. Responding to public concerns, Jamshedpur West MLA’s public facilities representatives, Pintu Singh and Santosh Bhagat, visited the affected site on Wednesday to assess the situation.

At Aastha Space Town, the contractor’s employee informed them that the tank supplying water to Zone No. 3 required two 45 HP pumps, but currently, only one 35 HP and another 20 HP pump were operational. Until now, a 45 HP pump from Zone No. 1 was being used to compensate for the shortage. However, on Tuesday, two pumps (one 45 HP and one 35 HP) burnt out, leading to complete water supply disruption.

The contractor’s employee stated that the burnt 45 HP pump was already in a deteriorated condition, and beyond repair. He blamed the department’s negligence, highlighting that no proactive measures were taken despite repeated warnings. The department’s SDO, Arif Ansari, confirmed the same issue.

When questioned, Junior Engineer (Civil) Ashutosh Pathak of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department shifted the responsibility to the Mechanical Department. However, Mechanical Department’s Junior Engineer, Kashinath, claimed that multiple requests were made for intervention, but no action had been taken. He also pointed out the poor condition of all pumps and questioned why the Civil Department continued paying the contractor despite repeated failures.

Pintu Singh and Santosh Bhagat informed MLA Saryu Roy about the situation. The affected residents were demanding immediate restoration of drinking water supply and a thorough investigation into the alleged collusion between the Civil Department and the contractor.

Residents continued to face severe inconvenience, and urgent action was needed to resolve the crisis.
