Jamshedpur Traffic Police Crack Down on Auto Drivers Operating Without Uniforms

Jamshedpur: The traffic police cracked down on auto-rickshaw drivers operating without uniforms in the city. Under the direction of Traffic DSP Neeraj Kumar, a special checking drive was conducted at various intersections across different traffic police station areas in the city. During this operation, punitive action was taken against 41 drivers operating without uniforms, and on-the-spot fines were recovered.

Panic Among Auto Drivers

The checking drive triggered widespread panic among local auto-rickshaw operators. Upon catching wind of the surprise inspections, several drivers without uniforms were seen changing routes to evade the police. However, the police personnel intercepted and penalized dozens of drivers.

Kumar stated that traffic police officers, along with the Traffic Quick Response Team (QRT) launched inspections across all police station jurisdictions to fine non-compliant drivers. He emphasized that maintaining the city’s transport system and ensuring strict compliance with traffic rules remains their top priority. A dress code is mandatory for auto drivers, and similar enforcement actions will continue against anyone violating the rules.

Drive Launched Following Non-Compliance of Instructions

The Traffic DSP had held a meeting with the auto-rickshaw union about 10 days prior, where detailed guidelines were issued. During that meeting, drivers were instructed not to operate their vehicles without uniforms, and a one-week grace period was granted to comply. However, even after the deadline passed, several drivers failed to adhere to the regulations, prompting the police to launch this enforcement drive.

The traffic police explained that the dress code for auto-rickshaw drivers has been implemented primarily to ensure the safety of commuters, particularly women.
