Jamshedpur, Jan 2: Jamshedpur could soon have a direct flight to Kolkata and Bhubaneswar under the Union government’s UDAN scheme.
If all goes well, the service could start by the end of this month.
Air services between Jamshedpur-Kolkata and Jamshedpur-Bhubaneswar are likely to be launched by January end, said Chankaya Chaudhary, vice president, corporate services, Tata Steel.
During an interaction with the media on the sidelines of New Year cake-cutting celebration at Centre for Excellence (CFE) on Monday, Chaudhary said, “Under the government’s Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) scheme efforts have been made to restart the air service from Steel City. A meeting to this regard was held on December 29. The minutes of the meeting are awaited and the company is hopeful that the air services will resume by the end of this month.”
The vice president reiterated that the company is keen to provide air services from Sonari aerodrome.
Earlier, airlines, such as MDLR, Vayudoot and Deccan Airways, had launched flights to nearby cities such as Kolkata and Ranchi from Sonari aerodrome, with small aircraft, but had ultimately stopped services. The demand to re-establish air connectivity has been a long pending demand from businesses in the area as well as the state government.
As per Udan scheme, a nine-seater aircraft would connect Jamshedpur to Kolkata and Bhuvneshwar.

Jamshedpur should have direct flight from jamshedpur to Deoghar
I s there any possibility of flights to other parts of the country in near future with bigger aircrafts?
Is there any possibility of flights to other parts of the country in near future with bigger aircrafts?
Until and unless full flagged services upto Mumbai, Surat, Delhi in operation the short distance flight do not fruitful to the operating company as well as passengers.
There is lack of planning, investment and political will to link Jamshedpur with Metro cities of the country.
Expecting flights connectivity atleast with all of the Metro cities on India currently at the initial stage and then later on with all the major as well as semi major remaining cities.
To kolkata and bhubaneswar doesn’t make sense.. kolkata is just 4 hrs away.. ranchi is 3 hrs by road .. why would ppl pay 3 times for a 9 seater? it makes more sense to connect to other major cities like Mumbai.. Delhi.. Hyderabad Bangalore and Pune.
Why can’t there be a proper airport in Jamshedpur?
