Jamshedpur : Cases of rape of minors and molestation of women are on the rise in the steel city. Several cases of heinous crime have been reported for fringe areas especially like Sidhgora Parsudih and Bagbera. During the past few months, several cases of rape and molestation have been reported with the Parsudih and Babgera police stations areas alone.

In a glaring incident a 12-year-old girl, daughter of daily-wage earners, who was raped by a co-tenant in May, according to an FIR lodged by her mother at Sidhgora police station on August 27 was pregnant.

Jharkhand High Court came to the rescue of a 12-year-old rape survivor, whom hospitals in Jamshedpur have refused abortion and allowed for abortion. Meanwhile, several social organizations come in support of the girl.

“It is really shocking to see a girl that such young age being raped. We welcome the decision of the court for allowing abortion. The situation has fast changed in our city. Women are not feeling safe now. Steps need to be taken to ensure their protection.

I am of the opinion that failure of police in arresting rape accused and people’s reluctance to file FIR regarding rape are some of the factors behind rising molestation cases”, Alpna Chakravarty says, an activist working for NGO.

“We need to hold discussions in high schools and colleges, in forums where films are screened and discussed. We need to have women police arrest men who harass women,” said the social worker.

Even cases relating to cheating minor girls in the guise of love and marriage too have gone up. Experts blame it on inactive police administration which is said to be indifferent to control criminal activities and influx of criminals from outside.

Prashant Anand, City SP said that crime cannot be controlled till there is a change in human consciousness. However, police are trying to give exemplary punishment to criminals.
