Jamshedpur Sikhs pay tribute to Guru Arjun Dev Ji’s supreme sacrifice

Jamshedpur: The 419th martyrdom day of the fifth Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji, was observed with solemn devotion and reverence across all 33 Gurudwaras of Jamshedpur today. From the early hours, devotees gathered in large numbers to participate in prayers, listen to Shabad Kirtan, and reflect on the profound sacrifices and teachings of the revered Guru.

Special arrangements were made at each Gurudwara to mark the day. Langars (community kitchens) served meals to thousands, and Chabeel—cold, sweetened water—was distributed generously to passersby, continuing a tradition of service and humility that Guru Arjun Dev Ji stood for.

“Today is a historic and sacred day for the Sikh community. Guru Arjun Dev Ji sacrificed his life for righteousness and faith,” said Satnam Singh, a devotee at Bistupur Gurudwara. “He attained martyrdom on this very day in 1606 at Lahore, under the orders of Mughal Emperor Jahangir.”

At Jugsalai Gurudwara, Bhai Amarjeet Singh addressed the congregation, highlighting the immense spiritual and cultural contributions of the fifth Guru. “Guru Arjun Dev Ji was instrumental in the compilation of the Adi Granth in 1604, which later became the Guru Granth Sahib. He also oversaw the construction of the holiest shrine of Sikhism—Sri Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple.”

Guru Arjun Dev Ji, born in 1563 in Goindwal, was the youngest son of the fourth Guru, Guru Ram Das Ji. A visionary spiritual leader, Guru Arjun Dev also contributed to the development of Amritsar, founded the city of Tarn Taran, and expanded Kartarpur.

“His martyrdom was unique—he was tortured for five days and ultimately killed, yet he maintained peace and composure till the end. His legacy is one of compassion, sacrifice, and universal love,” added another devotee.

Apart from Gurudwaras, numerous Sikh organizations and social groups also set up Chabeel stalls at key junctions and public areas across the city, offering cold refreshments to commuters and spreading Guru Ji’s message of service and kindness.

The observance concluded with Ardas (prayer) for peace, harmony, and the well-being of all, in the spirit of Guru Arjun Dev Ji’s teachings.
