Jamshedpur: Winter tightened its icy grip on Jharkhand as Gumla shivered at a bone-chilling 3.9°C, the lowest minimum temperature recorded in the state, according to the latest Weather Report issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi Meteorological Centre.
The sharp dip in night temperature pushed Gumla into cold wave conditions, underlining the severity of the ongoing winter spell. Similar cold wave conditions were also observed in parts of Bokaro, while other districts continued to reel under below-normal temperatures.
Daytime offered little relief as the mercury struggled to rise across the state. Jamshedpur recorded a maximum temperature of 21.1°C, nearly five degrees below normal, while Daltonganj touched only 20.5°C.
In Ranchi, the maximum temperature stood at 24.2°C, marginally above average but insufficient to offset the biting cold mornings and nights. Dense fog further compounded winter woes, severely reducing visibility in several areas.
Daltonganj reported the lowest visibility at just 300 metres, while fog was also observed in Jamshedpur (500 metres) and Deoghar (650 metres), disrupting early-morning movement. No rainfall was reported from any part of Jharkhand during the past 24 hours.
The IMD has warned that cold wave conditions are likely to persist in isolated pockets of the state, advising residents—particularly in Gumla and surrounding districts—to remain cautious, limit exposure during late night and early morning hours, and take necessary measures to protect against extreme cold.
