Jamshedpur, Oct 20: Ritu Mukhi, the class 9 student of Shardamoni Girls High School who attempted suicide through self-immolation after alleged humiliation by a teacher passed away on Thursday, sources said.
The minor was put on ventilator at Tata Main Hospital Wednesday late evening. Her pulse rate had reportedly gone down, leading the doctors to put her on life support, sources said.
Members of Mukhi Samaj and various academic and social outfits across the city condoled Ritu’s death and demanded stringent action against the guilty school teacher and staff. They alleged that the insensitivity of Ritu’s teacher cost her dearly.
SDO Dhalbhum Sandeep Kumar Meena had yesterday visited the hospital to see the minor. Security was beefed up at the hospital in view of the student’s demise.
Hundreds of residents of Chhayanagar including members of Mukhi Samaj had staged demonstration before the school on 15th October to demand action against the accused teacher, Chanda Das who had caught the victim cheating during her Science exam.
Das allegedly made the girl take off her dress in front of the class. Feeling humiliated and depressed, the girl poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire around 5 pm at her house soon after returning from school.
Many city outfits staged protests and demanded action against the school teacher. Das and the school Principal Geeta Rani were suspended by the school after the incident. Das was sent to jail and a team of district administration is conducting a probe into the incident.
