Jamshedpur: Second phase of Jharkhand Panchayat polls today, vigil stepped up

Jamshedpur, May 18: East Singhbhum administration is all set for the second phase of polling. For the second phase of polling, the Dispatch Center at Jamshedpur Cooperative College was inspected by the District Election Officer (Panchayat) Vijaya Jadhav. She observed the arrangements. The second phase of polling is to be held in Baharagora, Chakulia, Dhalbhumgarh on May 19 for which polling parties were being dispatched today.

A total of 81 booths have been identified as hypersensitive ( 62 in Chakulia, 10 in Dhalbhumgarh and 9 in Baharagora) while 210 booths  have been identified as  sensitive (81 in Baharagora, 76 in Chakulia and 53 in Dhalbhumgarh). There are a total of 648 booths in the three blocks of Chakulia, Dhalbhumgarh and Baharagora.

A police official said that more than 2000 police jawans from district police, Jharkhand Armed Police and district police would be doing duty tomorrow during the panchayat polls at rebel hit blocks of Dhalbhumgarh, Chakulia and Baharagora blocks.

Maoists called for a boycott of panchayat elections by putting up posters at some places. The posters asked the villagers not to cast their votes in the panchayat polls as it is merely an eyewash by the government.

 Over 40 per cent of the 12,648 seats were decided uncontested in the second phase of panchayat polls in the state, election officials said. In 5,093 seats, which is 40.26 percent of 12,648, there was only one candidate each after the deadline for withdrawal and rejection of nomination papers, they said.

The Deputy Commissioner, while highlighting the important aspects of the entire electoral process, said that the basis of the election is mainly the votes cast by the voters. The process of easy voting by the polling personnel and counting of votes are very important. Along with this, she stressed on taking special care of the election site, movement of vehicles to carry the ballot boxes. She directed that there should be no scope for any kind of delay in the electoral process under any circumstances.

The Deputy Commissioner directed all the returning officers to make available a sufficient number of handbooks of the Assistant Returning Officers to their respective Assistant Returning Officers.
