Jamshedpur schools’ open letter on ‘policy of promotion’

Jamshedpur, March 24: The Association of Jamshedpur Unaided Private Educational Institutions (AJUPEI), has, in an open letter, clarified the possibilities of incompleteness in education if the persistence of failed students being promoted conditionally or through special tests, is permitted. The letter states, “As Educators of the city of Jamshedpur, we write to you all with a deep sense of concern regarding the recent approaches and requests of promoting students who have not met the academic standards required for progression. As educators representing schools within the district, we feel compelled to address this issue for the betterment of our educational system and the welfare of our students.

“We have invested significant efforts over the past academic year, such as creating separate papers for weaker students, offering extra classes, and counselling parents and students on their future. We all follow guidelines laid down by our affiliated Councils.

“We believe in merit-based education founded on strong principles, but recent instances of asking schools to promote failing students undermine our credibility. While many states have repealed compulsory promotion up to std VIII, Jharkhand awaits similar measures.

“We recognize the complexities and challenges that students may face in their academic journey, and we are committed to providing support and resources to help them overcome these obstacles. However, promoting students without ensuring they have attained the necessary knowledge and skills not only compromises their educational development but also sets a precedent that devalues the importance of academic rigour and achievement. Moreover, it risks hindering their future success, failing in our duty to equip them for an increasingly competitive world.

“To parents, we appeal for understanding. Quality education is vital for long-term success.

“The schools are committed to providing interventions and support to students and parents while maintaining academic integrity, we would appreciate your collaboration for excellence.”

  1. Schools should take responsibility in making students realize the importance of studies, sports & other cocurricular activities. Schools should make sure that interest in students should come within to learn & self develope in order to make the base strong. No discrimination among students in terms of imparting knowledge based education & last but not the least, respect & promote every child’s area of interest in terms school subjects. The concept & clarity of subjects is missing in students these days. Students aren’t able to express their subjects properly because they are confused. The schools must understand and accept that there has been drasting degradation in imparting quality education over the years specially post-covid era.

  2. Lottery based admission and zero failures have led to this. Parents are happy as long as their child is getting promoted. They are in denial about their own lapses. They wake up suddenly when the system of automatic promotion stops. We see more and more autistic children in are classrooms. Ordinary teachers are not equipped to deal with them as well as the other children. Commenting is easy. Schools and teachers keep trying to do their bit but it is becoming increasingly difficult.

  3. Couldn’t agree more with you, Maddy. The education system and many educational institutions today, are bending in all directions to appease a certain group or section of parents that have neither the intellect nor time to be active partners with educators and help in the progress of their children..

  4. Ensuring a child’s ‘well being’ (and I stress upon the word) requires both the teachers as well as parents to collaborate together. Just leaving things to school in the belief that admitting their wards in a good School and providing tuition or coaching will not ensure the child’s success. Schools like to improve stidents performance – they have their reputation at stake. Parents would like to see their wards doing well academically.
Doesn’t that call for a collaboration?

  5. Now a days almost all students are inclined on Mobile, internet surfing, but not serious about their study, It is true that all students are not very intelligent on study, parents must ensure
their child should concentrate on study.
So long students are promoted to higher class
very few parents bothered but as soon as they faied to come across their expectations they blamed others.Parents must know as their child
promoted to higher class they should put more effort.
