Jamshedpur, August 31: Saturday saw widespread chaos at Sadar Hospital in Parsudih following a tragic accident that led to the death of nurse Shashikala and serious injuries to her husband. The incident occurred on Friday evening when a speeding 407 truck collided with the motorcycle Shashikala and her husband were riding, right at the main gate of the hospital.
The accident resulted in Shashikala’s immediate death, while her husband sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment. The shocking news triggered a massive protest by nurses and hospital staff, who gathered at the scene and demanded immediate action against the truck driver and compensation for the bereaved family. The demonstration lasted until around 5 am on Saturday morning, delaying patient care and creating significant disruption.
Following the postmortem, Shashikala’s family returned to Sadar Hospital with her body, intensifying their demands for compensation. In response to the escalating situation, hospital staff, including nurses, doctors, and local officials, gathered at the hospital gate to offer their support.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Sahir Pal, Panchayat Samiti member Sunil Gupta, and several local residents from Baghbeda intervened to address the protesters’ concerns. A cash grant of 50 thousand rupees was provided, and assurances were made for further support: Shashikala’s daughter will be offered an outsourced job at the hospital, and efforts will be made to secure one lakh twenty thousand rupees under a government scheme. Additionally, safety measures, including a breaker and street lights, will be installed near the hospital’s main gate.
The body was eventually taken to Gandhi Nagar, Baghbeda, where it was cremated with full rituals, marking the end of a day filled with sorrow and public outcry. (w/nkm)
