Jamshedpur: River pollution level low after puja immersion

Jamshedpur, Oct 23: Due to good spell of rains in Jharkhand especially in Kolhan region, this year the pollution level in Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers of Jamshedpur is very low.

Usually the pollution level of rivers used to increase significantly after the immersion of idols, but this time it did not happen.

At three major places in the city (Bodhanwala Ghat Bistupur, Domuhani Ghat Sonari, Gandhi Ghat Sakchi) the amount of chemicals in the water of both the rivers was found to be normal. In fact, the pollution control board had taken water samples from Kharkai-Suvarnarekha river at Bistupur, Sonari and Sakchi on October 11, October 15 and October 16 respectively. In the test report of all three samples, the chemical level in the water was found as per the prescribed standard.

The main reason for the reduction of pollution is also that this time small idols were made in Durga Puja. There was less use of chemicals in statue making. Separate arrangements were made for the immersion of worship materials. There was a strong flow of water in the river. Jharkhand received heavy rains in October. East Singhbhum received 89 percent more rainfall than the average. The entire Jharkhand recorded 70 per cent more rainfall than the average in October.

In this regard, Regional Officer of Pollution Control Board Jitendra Kumar Singh says that this year the pollution level in the rivers remained normal due to the small size of the idols and the rapid flow of water in the river due to rain. In the sample test, lethal chemical substances were not found in the river. Nitrate content was found to be normal. The pH level was found to be 8. The level of BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) in these rivers has decreased slightly.
