Heatwave alert issued for Jharkhand as temperatures soar
According to the IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre, heatwave conditions are likely over isolated places in southeastern Jharkhand, including Garhwa and Palamu districts, over the next two days. Northwestern parts of the state could also see high temperatures, especially around Sunday, March 16.
A heatwave is officially declared when the maximum temperature rises at least 5°C above the normal range. On Thursday, Jamshedpur recorded a high of 39.3°C, while Chaibasa reported 39.8°C. The hottest location was Baharagora in East Singhbhum, where the temperature peaked at 40.3°C.
Daltonganj recorded 38.7°C, exceeding normal levels by 5–6°C, while Bokaro’s maximum temperature reached 38.5°C, which was 5.6°C above the normal range. Other districts, including Godda (37.1°C) and Pakur (38.8°C), also witnessed soaring temperatures.
Weather officials have warned about the possible occurrence of Loo, the hot and dry winds common in the region during this season. These winds may intensify the heatwave, especially in southern Jharkhand, over the next 24 hours.
Residents have been advised to take precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and wearing light, breathable clothing. Authorities have also urged people to limit outdoor activities and take extra care of vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, during this period of extreme heat.
