Jamshedpur: Recent showers ease rain deficit to 19%

Jamshedpur: The recent spell of showers over the past three to four days has significantly alleviated Jharkhand’s rain deficit, bringing it down to 19% as of today. In meteorological terms, a 19% rain deficit is considered almost normal, providing much-needed relief to the state.

According to statistical data, the state has received 435 mm of rainfall against a normal expectation of 538 mm, resulting in the current 19% deficit. This improvement is attributed to the widespread and heavy rainfall observed over the past few days.

For the first time since the onset of the monsoon, two districts—Ranchi and Dhanbad—have reported a surplus in rainfall, each achieving a 9% increase above normal levels. This marks a significant turnaround from the previously dry conditions experienced across the state.

No rain alerts were issued for today. However, forecasts predict heavy rainfall at isolated places in the northeastern and northwestern parts of the state tomorrow, August 6. Similarly, heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas in the western parts of the state on Wednesday, August 7.

The current monsoon trough at mean sea level extends through a low-pressure center over southwest Rajasthan and its neighboring regions, including Ajmer, Gwalior, Sidhi, and the deep depression over southwest Bihar and adjoining northwest Jharkhand. It continues through Bankura and Canning, then southeastwards to the northeast Bay of Bengal. Additionally, an east-west trough from north Rajasthan to south Assam is running from the deep depression over southwest Bihar and adjoining northwest Jharkhand to east Assam, situated between 0.9 km and 4.5 km above mean sea level.

These meteorological conditions indicate a persistent and dynamic weather pattern, which has been instrumental in reducing the state’s rain deficit. As the monsoon progresses, the state remains hopeful for continued rainfall to further mitigate the deficit and support agricultural activities and water resources.

“ Residents are advised to stay updated with local weather forecasts and take necessary precautions in areas expected to receive heavy rainfall in the coming days. The recent showers have not only brought respite but also underscored the importance of preparedness during the monsoon season,” said an official.
