Saraikela, Dec 27: A rare Blue-Throat (Luscinia Svecica) was spotted for the first time in a paddy field in Kharsawan early morning searching for insects that cause damage to crops.
The Blue-Throat is a small Passerine bird, considered to be an ‘Old World’ Flycatcher of ‘Muscicapidae’ family. The Blue-Throat, termed Neel Kanthi in Hindi, is a migratory insectivorous species breeding in wet birch wood or bushy swamps in Europe and across the Palearctic including Western Alaska. The Blue-Throat (Luscinia Svecica) nests in Tussocks or lower parts of dense bushes. During the winter, it migrates to regions in North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The blue throat (Luscinia Svecica) is a small migratory bird and comes to India in winter (October) and leaves in March-April. It has been recorded that this bird comes all the way from Alaska and despite its smallness is capable of travelling up to 80-100 km per day. In Hindi, this bird is known as Neel Kanthi, a literal translation of Blue-Throat. But this Neel Kanthi is different from the Indian Roller which is known as Neel-Kanth.
