Jamshedpur: JBVNL has launched a stringent recovery drive targeting electricity consumers with outstanding dues exceeding Rs 10,000. In an effort to boost revenue, the corporation has identified 14,326 defaulters in Kolhan, initiating a campaign that will run until March 31.
Daily recovery target
To expedite the process, every branch of the corporation has been tasked with recovering dues from 25 major defaulters daily. Speaking on the matter, Ajit Kumar, General Manager of the Jamshedpur Area Board, stated, “We are focused on recovering dues rather than disconnecting connections, but strict measures, including fines and legal action, will be taken if consumers fail to pay.”
Highlights of the Campaign
- Connections of defaulters with dues above Rs 10,000 will be disconnected.
- Defaulters can avoid disconnection by paying at least 50% of the outstanding amount.
- A fine of Rs 10,000 will be levied on those failing to settle dues promptly.
- The drive aims to reduce the corporation’s financial losses, which have reached alarming levels.
Financial Struggles of JBVNL
JBVNL has been grappling with persistent losses over recent years:
- Rs 2,200 crore in 2020-21
- Rs 2,600 crore in 2021-22
- Rs 2,500 crore in 2022-23
- Rs 7,400 crore in 2023-24
The mounting losses have prompted the department to take this decisive step. According to sources, West Singhbhum has the highest number of defaulters in Kolhan, with over 11,000 consumers owing more than Rs 5,000.
Legal action on the horizon
Ajit Kumar further warned, “Legal action will follow disconnection if defaulters do not comply. The corporation is determined to recover dues and reduce financial strain.”
With the end of the financial year approaching, JBVNL’s aggressive campaign reflects its resolve to address its economic challenges and improve its revenue stream. Consumers have been urged to settle their dues promptly to avoid penalties and disruptions.
