Jamshedpur Police work on strategies as city reports spurt in loot and thefts

Jamshedpur, Oct 11: Even as the police continue to grapple with the spurt in snatching, looting and thefts in the steel city, city police have launched a series of measures to curb the incidents of such crimes today.

To curb the mounting criminal incidents, the police have started random checking of  bikes, beefing up security in and outside the bank premises, centralising the patrol vehicles to police control room instead of confining in the thanas and deciding to set up checking points at the exit points in the city.

Today police carried out a special drive checking the riders of sports bikes at strategic points across the city from 10 am  to noon.

At Bistupur, the special drive was conducted by the Bistupur police near G-Town Club turning, a place which is new for such checking. Similarly, at Sakchi the special drive was conducted throughout Masjeed Road and in Golmuri the two-hour-long drive was carried out near the Golmri roundabout.  The special drive was also carried out in Kadma, Telco, Jugsalai and Mango where incidents of snatching were reported regularly.

The measures as mentioned above were decided to be taken at the behest of senior SP, Prabhat Kumar following a meeting of senior police officers on Monday.

Apart from the incident of loot and snatching of cashes, over 50 incidents of cell-phone and chain snatching and also bike-lifting have been reported from the Bistupur area during this period.

A police officer said that though they have not got any clue to the incident of snatching, they are taking such measures which will bring down the level of snatching, loot and bike lifting shortly. “We have focused on the riders of sports bikes and ensuring that the bike-riders are outside the city. We are stressing on the sport-bike riders as we have established that while committing crime like looting and snatching, the criminals use the sports bike,” he said.

The officer said they have also decided to check the effectiveness of the CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the banks so that the police may get clear footage of the suspected criminals involved behind any incident of crime.

“We have also convened a meeting of the bank managers to isolate the cash counters from other departments in a bank so that the criminals may not get an idea which customers are withdrawing which amount of money.  Besides, we have also decided to ask the bank management to introduce a system of checking apparently unwanted persons at the entrance of the bank and jotting down the names and cell-phones numbers of such persons so as to avoid the entry of any criminal element inside a bank,” he informed. The senior police officer stated that very soon they will set up permanent check-points at the exits.
