SSP gives clarion call to cops for controlling spurt in crime

Jamshedpur, Feb 22: Facing flak for failing to curb spurt in crime, city police is gearing up to crack down on criminals with renewed vigour.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), East Singhbhum, Dr M Tamil Vanan, Tuesday said a special anti-crime checking would be conducted across the city every morning and evening with the view to tighten noose around thieves, looters and other criminals.

The SSP convened a meeting at Bistupur police station to discuss the law and order situation of the city and chalk out plan to deal with the recent spurt in crime. He said he and other senior police officers would be taking charge of the campaign to rid the city of the menace of loots, snatching and other crimes.

Sources said the SSP had directed the officers in-charge (OCs) of all police station of the city to intensify patrolling and anti-crime checking in their respective areas of jurisdiction. The OCs have been asked to deal strictly with anti-social elements found involved in suspicious activities. Tiger Mobile teams have also been directed to keep a watch on suspicious activities of criminals round-the-clock, sources said.

All DSPs and OCs were present in today’s meeting. The SSP and other officials discussed about the loopholes in policing and ways to remove them. Various technical aspects of crime investigation were discussed at length. Suggestions were also sought from the officials on ways to improve the law and order situation.

In today’s meeting, it was decided to prosecute owners of cars with black screens to prevent criminals from moving about the city.

City police are under pressure after recent cash loot of Rs 32 lakh at Bistupur, loot of gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh at Sakchi and loot of gold chain worth Rs 4 lakh at Baradwari. Other crimes including firing at Golmuri also invited criticism for the police from various quarters, especially the business community.

Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry has threatened to intensify agitation in case the police fail to control crime effectively.
