Jamshedpur. Sept. 21: Police have launched a drive to nab racketeers involved in food-grains racket. After a major food-grains racket was unearthed by police and district supply department, the police have started a hunt for the racketeers who have absconded.
The police had raided the house of Sanjay Mohnani and brother Deepak Mohnani at Golmuri. During the raid it was found that the two brothers were running the racket of selling out rice and wheat meant for the people below the poverty line (BPL) through the public distribution system (PDS) shops.
OC, Kunal Kumar of Sakchi police station said that the police are looking to have made themselves underground or have fled the city. The police are on hunt to nab them so that the links of the racket can be revealed.
“Following repeated complaints we raided the house of Mohnanis at Golmuri on Sunday and had also carried out the similar raid on Saturday. We have to decide to obtain `kurki-jabti’ (attachment) warrant so that the absconders may be compelled to surrender either before the police or in the court,” said Kumar.
Meanwhile, the food and supply department also cancelled the license of a PDS shop that Sanjay Mohnani used to possess. The department also cancelled the food-grain transportation tender of Deepak Mohnani.
Police and supply department officials seized over 1,500 quintals of rice and wheat from two unauthorised godowns under Sakchi and Golmuri police station on Friday.
The seized food-grains were meant for distribution among people belonging to below poverty line (BPL) category under the scheme of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna and had been brought here from Food Corporation of India’s (FCI) godowns.
The team conducted raids from godowns behind the Kerala Samajam Model School, the other godown was located near Howrah Bridge along the Kalimati Road under Golmuri police area.
Special Officer (Rationing), East Singhbhum, Naveen Kumar who led the raid at both the places said that both the godowns belong to one Sanjay Mohnani who is on run.
“During investigation we found that there were 1,100 sacks, mostly that of rice, whereas at the Golmuri godown. We seized the Sakchi godown, whereas the act of sealing the Golmuri godown is in the process,” said Kumar. The team from both the godowns have recovered a large number of stickers that had been removed from the government-supplied wheat and rice.
