Jamshedpur: Within 24 hours of deputy inspector general (DIG), Kolhan, Rajiv Ranjan Singh announced to set up a 20-member special team to combat drug menace in Jamshedpur and Adityapur in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district, a drug-peddler was on Thursday arrested with 49 from packets of ‘brown sugar’ from Azadnagar police station area Mango, giving a boost to the district police in fight against the drug menace in the steel city. The drug-peddler was identified as Mohammed Firoz.
OC, Azadnagar police station , Naresh Prashad Sinha said that Firoz (32) who is a resident of Adityapur Muslim Bustee in Adityapur was arrested from Old Purulia Road in Azadnagar at about 11 am today.
“Acting on a tip off that a youth was looking for drug addicts on the Old Purulia Road, a police party swung into action and finally traced the youth. On searching, the police found 49 small packets, containing brown powder from his possession. The youth, Mohammed Firoz, was taken into custody and later during interrogation he confessed the packets contained brown sugar, ” said Sinha.
The Azadnagar police station OC said that Firoz used to target the brown sugar customers, especially youngsters from the steel city would go to Adityapur Muslim Bustee for buying the drugs. However, as police became vigilant and after the arrest of about half-a-dozen drug-peddlers in Adityapur in the recent past, they started visiting the locality of the drug-addicts instead.
Significantly, the erstwhile Seraikela-Kharsawan SP, Mohammed Arshi during his two-year tenure carried out effective operations against the drug-peddlers who would operate from the Adityapur Muslim Bustee. He did not only arrest several drug-peddlers, but also succeeded in nailing Dolly, the lady kingpin who had been evading arrest for a long time.
Following strict action of the police, the drug-peddlers from the Adityapur Muslim Bustee have started selling brown sugar in the steel city’s localities like Azadnagar, Mango, and Parsudih.
