Jamshedpur: A four year old boy, identified as Kashif, son of Anwar Ali, an LKG student of Tagore Academy, Sakchi, was run down to death by a pick-up van carrying chicks in Dhatkidih under Bistupur police station area on Sunday.
Irked over the incident, local residents vandalized the van whose driver fled the scene after the incident. The residents alleged that the reckless drivers supplying chicken to local meat shops often posed serious risk on their lives, but police took no action against them despite repeated reminders.
Sources said the incident occurred when the child was playing near Workers� Flat. Just then, the pick-up van coming at speed hit the boy and crushed him to death. The minor died at the scene. The driver left the van on the road and decamped before the kid�s relatives could catch him.
Shortly after the incident, all chicken and meat sellers of the area fled their places. Cops demolished several illegal structures thereafter.
Local residents also said that they had asked police to remove the shops but no action was taken till date.
An FIR was lodged against the errant driver with the Bistupur police station. Traffic on the main road was blocked for several hours after the incident.
