Jamshedpur: Over 200 doctors and nurses down with Covid

Jamshedpur, Jan 16: As the Covid infections gallop in Jamshedpur, an increasing number of doctors and healthcare workers are getting affected by the virus. Even though the rate of hospitalisation has not been much of a worry till now, healthcare workers contracting the infection could put the system under threat.

According to an estimate about 200 doctors have been infected with Covid-19 in the steel city.  Doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff  of Tata Main Hospital, MGM Medical College Hospital, Tata Motors Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Sadar Hospital and Brahmananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital have been hit by the virus.

Addressing the media during a telephonic press meet, Dr Rajan Choudhry, advisor, Covid-19, Tata Main Hospital informed that the doctors and nurses of TMH are also on the path to recovery but still 52 doctors and 130 nurses are not reporting earlier, the figures were much higher. He said that the healthcare workers are following norms but still the speed of infection is so high that even they have been hardly affected by it.  

 “The doctors and nurses are exposed to the threat. As per our estimate about 45 doctors and as many nurses of our hospital are down with the Covid-19, ” said Arun Kumar, superintendent, MGM Medical College Hospital.

District civil surgeon, AK Lal also expressed concern over the increasing number of doctors being infected with Covid-19 resulting in an adverse impact on the treatment of patients suffering from diseases other than the Covid.

He further noted that despite the fall people should continue to avoid crowding, wear masks and follow social distancing. This will reduce the chances of spread of the virus. If we remain serious about the protocols the virus will further reduce significantly.

He said that as part of the precautions for the next wave it is important to get your family and friends vaccinated. The more people get vaccinated the less the chance of pandemic hitting us as hard as it did this time. It is important to wear a proper mask to protect yourself. Follow all COVID-19 protocols.
