Jamshedpur MLA Saryu Roy to commence pollution study of Swarnrekha and Damodar rivers’ from today

Jamshedpur, May 21:   Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy, in his campaign to make Damodar and Swarnrekha rivers pollution-free, will embark on a study tour of Swarnrekha River from May 22 which is observed as Biodiversity Day. This will be followed by his tour of Damodar River’s pollution level from June 5 that is observed as World Environment Day. The Yatra or tours are being organized by Yugantar Bharati, Nature Foundation, Damodar Bachao Andolan and Swarnrekha Kshetra Vikas Manch.

During the tour, Roy will be making special studies on the impact of urban pollution on rivers. A team of scientists with a mobile laboratory will accompany the legislator during his twin tours. The effects of industrial pollution on rivers have been a major subject of study and agitation during the pre-COVID period. The Swarnrekha River, for the purpose of pollution study had been divided into Upper Swarnrekha in which Hatia, Dhurwa, Ranchi, Namkum, Tatisiwi, Muri were the main places through which this river passed and the other as Lower Swarnrekha that included Jamshedpur and Musabani were the major places from where pollutants were being discharged into the river waters.

 The study tour will be be conducted over a period of two days in the upper Swarnrekha region from May 22 and 23 and for four days in the lower Swarnrekha region from May 23 to May 27. During the Yatra, the pollution of rice mills built on the banks of the river near Nagdi, the point of origin of Swarnrekha, will be specially studied along with the impact of the Dhuruwa Dam.

This will be followed by inspection of pollution level in Swarnrekha waters where effluents from drains originating from Ranchi city were channelized into the river’s waters. Moreover, the pollution of Swarnrekha and its tributary, Kharkai caused by garbage and other liquid wastes flowing in from Jamshedpur city will be studied. On the basis of the findings of the study, the state and central governments will be urged to implement a special scheme to make the rivers pollution free.

Dr MK Jamuar, joint Convener, Ashish Shital Munda, Tapeshwar Keshri, Sudhir Kumar ‘Sameer’, Sanjay Singh, Anshul Sharan and many environmentalists will be Saryu Roy’s team members during the fact finding twin tours.
