Jamshedpur, August 1: On Thursday, Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy raised the issue of suspended water supply from the Moharda Water Supply Project during the Assembly’s zero hour. He pointed out that pollution in the Swarnarekha River has filled the intake well of the project with garbage, making it impossible to draw and purify water for drinking. As a result, around 50,000 residents had been deprived of drinking water for four days.
Roy criticized the initial construction of the Moharda Project, stating it led to garbage accumulation in the intake well every rainy season. He demanded that water, which was released from Chandil Dam into the Swarnarekha River, should instead be directed into Dimna Lake for drinking water supply purposes. He suggested that water drawn from the Swarnarekha River should be reserved for industrial use.

While Roy was addressing the Assembly, on his special request, 2000 cusecs of water were released from Chandil Dam on Thursday to clear the intake well at Moharda. Chandil Dam Executive Engineer Sanjay Singh confirmed that water was released from five gates to flush out the garbage. It was expected that the water pressure would clean the well and restore drinking water supply.
Roy had previously written to Water Resources Secretary Prashant Kumar, urging the release of excess water to clear the intake well. He also noted that the intake well’s location and the pump’s orientation contributed to annual blockages during the rainy season. The water released was anticipated to resolve the immediate crisis, enabling the resumption of water supply to the affected areas.
