Jamshedpur MLA Saryu Roy calls for urgent action as fire reignites at Sonari garbage dump

Jamshedpur, Dec 8: Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy has raised an alarm over the rekindling of a fire at the Sonari garbage dump, bringing back the hazardous conditions that plagued the area two years ago. The dump, which is used for the disposal of various types of waste from the Mango Municipal Corporation and Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC), is now overloaded with wet and dry garbage, chemical waste, medical waste, and e-waste.

“This situation is a result of continuous negligence and complicity between the district administration and the Pollution Control Board,” Roy stated during a press conference. “Despite earlier protests by me and the people of Sonari, and even a legal intervention by senior Supreme Court advocate Sanjay Upadhyay, the authorities have failed to act.”

Upadhyay had previously filed a petition with the National Green Tribunal (NGT), urging action. In response, the district administration and Pollution Control Board had assured the NGT that they would resolve the issue and submitted an action plan. However, Roy pointed out that two years later, the conditions have worsened. “Public health is now at serious risk, and the administration has failed to fulfill its promises,” he added.

Roy further warned, “If effective steps are not taken, we will be forced to take this matter back to the NGT. A case of contempt will be filed against the district administration and the Pollution Control Board for failing to implement the action plan.”
