Jamshedpur, May 25: East Jamshedpur MLA Saryu Roy urged JNAC Special Officer, Krishna Kumar to provide basic facilities to street hawkers and pushcart vendors engaged in different activities to earn their livelihood. The MLA said that a couple, of days earlier, a large number of such vendors had met him and complained of problems that they faced while doing their business. Saryu Roy said that these footpath vendors had been provided Vendor License to do business at their designated spots but in spite of it, they were pressurized by local toughs, police-JNAC personnel and parking fee collectors who demanded ‘gratification money’ for allowing them to do their business.
Saryu Roy informed that these footpath vendors had complained to him that there were quite a few moneyed people who engaged in the hire or sale of pushcarts business and such people and their modes of business were adversely affecting their vending business. The East Jamshedpur MLA asked the JNAC Special Officer to register the footpath and pushcart vendors by recording their business locations in the manner that was followed during giving licenses to welders. Saryu said, “This way, a major worry for these vendors would gradually be removed. JNAC should ensure that the vendors are not deprived of their earning ways and that they were not bothered by local goons, parking lot employees and police-JNAC personnel.”
Roy further said that road congestions especially along busy thoroughfares were avoidable if strong steps were taken against illegal parking that included setting up pushcarts that blocked smooth traffic flow. Space for setting up stalls and pushcarts should be monitored and such points should be demarcated by JNAC officials. He said that health insurance cover, and small loans should be provided to the vendors to prevent urban poverty.
