Jamshedpur: In a major crackdown on illegal sand mining, the District Mining Department seized 17,500 CFT of illegally stored sand in a raid conducted in the early hours of Tuesday at Veerdih river ghat, under Ichagarh police station limits.
The operation, led by the District Mining Officer, began with an initial inspection at Kandra Chowk Road, where officials checked transport documents of trucks carrying iron and sand. Though no irregularities were found there, further raids were conducted at 3:30 AM at Veerdih, leading to the discovery of a large-scale illegal sand stockpile.
Authorities have stated that further action will be taken against those involved in illegal mining. A senior official remarked, “Illegal sand mining is causing environmental degradation and revenue loss. Strict measures are necessary to curb this menace.”
Illegal mining has been a persistent issue in Jharkhand, with various groups involved in the unauthorized extraction and sale of sand. The government has been conducting regular enforcement drives, but the problem continues. Officials have warned of harsh legal action against those found violating mining regulations, urging people to report such activities. Investigations are currently ongoing to identify the culprits.
