Jamshedpur, Oct 1: In a first, doctors of MGM Medical College successfully performed total hip replacement surgery on a patient from Bantanagar, Adityapur.
The team led by the Head of Department, Orthopaedics, Dr GS Baraik, took four hours to complete the surgery. There were a total of nine doctors in the team.
According to Dr Baraik, “The patient suffered from Avascular Necrosis due to which blood supply to her hip was reduced. As a result, nutrition and oxygen could not reach her bones and cells had started to die. In such a situation, total hip replacement was the only option.”
The patient, Sunita Devi, was admitted under Ayushman Bharat scheme. Her hip bone was fractured after an accidental fall and later her condition deteriorated.
She had earlier consulted private doctors and was told the surgery could cost her Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh. However, one person advised her to undergo surgery under the Ayushman scheme. Given the treatment cost, her husband Avdhesh Rajak had lost hope of her recovery. “Ayushman scheme gave a new lease of life to my ailing wife. Otherwise it would not have been possible for us to get her treated,” said Rajak.
The doctors’ team included Dr Y Sanga, Dr Abhishek Gudiya, Dr Shubhankar Mandal, Dr Amit Kumar, Dr Sooraj Oraon and Dr Rajan.
