Jamshedpur Loyola School celebrates Sarhul

Jamshedpur, April 4: Loyola School celebrated Sarhul Festival on Monday with a special assembly. The students spoke about the rich and varied culture of Jharkhand, the love and care for Mother Earth and their duties to care for the planet. The students put up a song and dance show as well as a skit, highlighting the significance of this festival especially in today’s scenario of climate change.

On the occasion, Father Pius Fernandes, principal Loyola School said: “Sarhul is the festival of religious faith, which has been celebrated here for centuries. This tribal festival has kept its originality despite a lot of changes in life with the passage of time. Sarhul offers an opportunity and reason to relate ourselves with Mother Nature. The main aspect of Sarhul is that the tribals have preserved their traditions and culture for such a long time.”

One of the most popular tribal festivals celebrated across the Jharkhand region, Sarhul marks the beginning of the New Year. It is celebrated by the Oraon, the Munda, and the Ho tribes of the Jharkhand region.

This vibrant festival is celebrated at the beginning of spring every year in the first month of the Hindu calendar, on the third day of the moon or the fortnight of ‘Chaitra’. Travellers across the world visit Jharkhand to glimpse this colourful fiesta of the eastern Indian state.
