Jamshedpur Lok Sabha polls: Ban on election campaigning 48 hours before voting ends

Jamshedpur: In adherence to the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), a strict ban on election campaigning will be enforced 48 hours before the conclusion of voting for the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha constituency. This measure, in accordance with Section 126 of the Public Representation Act 1951, aims to ensure a free and fair electoral process.

According to Section 126 of the Public Representation Act 1951, the following activities are prohibited in any polling area during the 48-hour period preceding the close of polling: Public Meetings and Processions: No person shall call, organize, attend, participate in, or address any public meeting or procession in connection with the election.

Exhibition of Election Material: The public exhibition of election-related materials through media such as cinema, television, or similar means is prohibited.

Publicity through Entertainment: No musical concerts, theatrical performances, or any other entertainment or amusement meant to attract the public towards election-related matters can be organized or arranged.

Any individual found violating these provisions can face severe penalties, including: Imprisonment for up to two years. A fine or both.

In line with ECI guidelines, political workers and campaigners who have come from outside the district must leave the district by 5:00 PM on May 23, 2024. This directive applies specifically to individuals who are not voters or candidates in the Assembly Constituency/09-Jamshedpur Lok Sabha constituency.  Should any external political workers be found campaigning or present in the constituency after the specified period, they will be subject to legal action under relevant sections.

The order from the Election Commission emphasizes the necessity of removing external political functionaries to maintain an impartial and unprejudiced polling environment. The presence of these individuals beyond the campaigning period could potentially compromise the integrity of the election process.

An official statement from the Election Commission of India states: “After the closure of the campaign period, no campaign activity can take place within the constituency. The presence of political functionaries, party workers, procession functionaries, campaign functionaries, etc., who have been brought from outside the constituency and who are not voters of the constituency, should not continue to remain in the constituency. Their continued presence after the campaign ends may undermine the atmosphere for a free and fair poll.”

By enforcing these regulations, the Election Commission aims to uphold the democratic process and ensure that the elections are conducted in a fair, transparent, and unbiased manner.

The ECI’s enforcement of a 48-hour ban on election campaigning and the removal of external political workers from the Jamshedpur constituency underscore the importance of maintaining the sanctity of the electoral process. Citizens are urged to comply with these regulations to contribute to a smooth and fair election.
