Jamshedpur: The chamber building of Jamshedpur’s old court premises buzzed with activity yesterday as the Lawyers Defense group convened a critical meeting to address pressing issues facing the local legal community. Chaired by Advocate Kumar Rajesh Ranjan and moderated by Advocate Paramjit Srivastava, the gathering brought to light several concerns, chief among them the long-overdue District Bar Association elections.

The meeting, attended by a diverse group of legal professionals, highlighted the growing frustration over the 8-month delay in holding the bar elections. This postponement has effectively stalled various welfare and development initiatives for advocates in the region. Advocate Akshay Kumar Jha led the charge, calling for immediate action to expedite the election process through engagement with relevant officials.

The discussion touched on several key issues beyond the delayed elections. Advocate Amit Kumar voiced concerns over the lack of progress in advocates’ overall development and health insurance since 2004, emphasizing the need for comprehensive welfare programs. Advocate Vivek Kumar raised another crucial point, suggesting that the Bar Association should take control of selling legal documents and forms, a task currently handled by vendors, to ensure that the benefits accrue to the legal community.

In a show of unity, the gathering unanimously agreed to submit a memorandum to the newly appointed Governor, with a particular emphasis on the importance of the Advocate Protection Act. This move underscores the legal community’s commitment to securing better safeguards and working conditions for its members.

The meeting saw participation from numerous prominent lawyers, including virtual attendance by Advocate Naveen Prakash, demonstrating the widespread interest in these issues. As the gathering concluded with a vote of thanks by Advocate Vivek Kumar and the singing of the national anthem, there was a palpable sense of determination among the attendees to drive meaningful change in their professional sphere.
